What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a mitochondrial fatty acid that is found naturally in every cell within the body. It is a Vitamin like compound that is highly involved with energy metabolism. Alpha Lipoic Acid is commonly referred to as ALA.
Peak Supps ALA provide 300mg per capsule. ALA is often referred to as the Universal antioxidant as it soluble in both water and fat. The solubility allows ALA to function in the membrane and aqueous parts of cells, its ability to pass the blood-brain barrier, allows it to interact with virtually every cell in the body. As an antioxidant it neutralises free radicals and scavenges several reactive oxygen species (ROS).
ALA supports the regeneration of Glutathione, one of the body’s primary antioxidants. It also helps recycle Glutathione, Co Enzyme Q10, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. ALA supplements can increase glucose uptake, mimicking insulin and shuttling it off to Glut-4 receptors. An increased number of Glut-4 receptors outside the muscle allows for more glucose and other nutrients (e.g. Amino acids, creatine) to be absorbed /transported to the muscle.
Alpha Lipoic acid is often referred to as the ‘universal antioxidant’.
