Taurine is an amino acid found in foods such as meat, fish and dairy products. Amino acids are used for several bodily functions including creating proteins and enzymes. Amino acids are broken down into three different groups: essential, non-essential and conditional amino acids.

Taurine is considered a ‘conditional essential amino acid’, meaning that for the majority of individuals, it is produced in the body, but for maximum stores Taurine has to be consumed through diet or supplementation. It is found in high concentrations in white blood cells, skeletal muscles, heart muscles and the central nervous system.
